Aurelia and Cobar Business Association’s International Women’s Day Morning Tea

On 8 March 2025, Aurelia held an International Women’s Day Morning Tea at its Community Hub in the heart of Cobar.

Held in conjunction with the Cobar Business Association, the Morning Tea helped highlight issues pertinent to women in business, the community and the mining industry through robust discussions about how we can come together to ‘accelerate action’ towards gender equality.

General Manager – Cobar Region, Angus Wyllie opened the event before handing over to the Morning Tea’s Master of Ceremonies, Editor of The Cobar Weekly, Sharon Harland.  Sharon had the honour of introducing guest speakers, Naomi Hesse Huston from Nome’s Custom Cleaning, and Trudy Griffiths. Naomi spoke about how she turned her passion for cleaning into a successful business that employees 16 people, while Trudy shared her thoughts on gender inequality in sport and the Girls in Motorsport Mentoring Program.

Senior Environment and Community Supervisor, Laura Newton briefly spoke about the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion at Aurelia, before handing over to Aurelia Apprentice Electrician, Kristy Neate who shared stories about her career journey and experiences working in a non-traditional female role.

Angus Wyllie spoke about the event.

“It was fantastic to see so many people from the Cobar community at our Morning Tea this year. International Women’s Day is an opportunity for everyone to come together to discuss issues women face in business and in non-traditional roles and how we can work together to remove unconscious bias on the road towards building a more gender equal society.

“At Aurelia, we’re committed to diversity and to enshrining the ideals of equity and inclusion across our workforce. Importantly, this commitment extends to our communities. We’ll continue to lead by example and support issues that promote these ideals within our workforce and in the areas in which we operate,” Angus said.
